- Q: What is the WhatGives!? PayPal Widget ?
- The WhatGives!? PayPal Widget will help you raise money for your nonprofit on Facebook and other websites. The widget makes it easy for your supporters to connect and share your nonprofit's message directly through the widget, and help you fundraise via social media (Facebook, Twitter, Blogs). The widgets are viral because supporters can copy them and add them to their own Facebook or websites. When donors click the donation button, they complete their transaction securely on the PayPal site, and funds are deposited directly to your organization's PayPal account.
- Q: What are the requirements for getting a WhatGives!? PayPal Widget?
- Your organization must be a registered nonprofit with a PayPal account, and your account's nonprofit status must be verified by PayPal. To get started, visit widget.whatgives.com and follow the steps. You'll need your organization's PayPal account email address and EIN.
- Q: How long is the verification process?
- After you create your widget profile, the PayPal verification process takes 3-5 business days. You will receive an email confirmation (sent the to individual email address entered) to let you know if your organization has been verified by PayPal. Once verified, your widget becomes fully functional and is ready to install on Facebook or your website.
- Q: How will my organization get the donations made through my widget and copies of my widget?
- Donations made through your organization's widget, including all copies of your widget, are deposited in your organization's PayPal account.
- Q: Does PayPal take a fee?

PayPal offers low transaction fees for nonprofits. Fees are applied only when you accept a contribution. If you don't receive donations, you don't pay. You will not be charged setup fees or recurring monthly fees.
Nonprofit transaction fees are 1.9% + $.30 per transaction for organizations with over $100,000 monthly volume and 2.2% + $.30 per transaction for organizations with less than $100,000 monthly volume. To be eligible, you must have documented 501(c)(3) status or you will not receive the reduced nonprofit transaction fees.
- Q: Does MySpace support the WhatGives!? PayPal Widget?
- No. Similar fundraising widgets are available for MySpace here: www.myspace.com/paypal
- Q: I don't want others to add the widget to their site. How can I prevent this?
- By default, the widget allows supporters to copy your widget onto their Facebook profiles or web pages. To disallow others from copying the widget, select the checkbox at the bottom of page of in STEP 2, Widget Design. If you select this box, the copy function will not be displayed on the widget. If you had previously allowed supporters to copy your widget and later decided to disallow others from copying the widget, the existing copies will remain visible but new copies cannot be made.
- Q: What does the Total Raised amount reflect?
- The total raised amount is a running total of all donations made through the widget or any copies of the widget. The total is automatically updated each time a donation is processed through the widget or any copies of the widget.
- Q: How do I add my organization's logo to the giving widget?
- You may upload an image in .jpg or .gif format (500K max) to your widget in STEP 2, Widget Design.
- Q: Do I have to specify a financial goal?
- No. You can turn off the goal meter. In this case, do not specify a goal amount.
- Q: Whose names are displayed in the scrolling bar? What if I don't see a donor's name in the scrolling bar?
- The scrolling bar will display the names (first name & last initial) of donors who complete donations through the widget on your site or any site the widget has been copied to.
- Q: What currencies are supported?

You may specify a currency for your widget in "Goal and Progress". U.S. Dollars is the default currency if you do not make another selection.
- Q: Do I have to design a widget? Which fields are optional?
- You do not have to complete STEP 2 to design your widget. If you choose to bypass this step, your widget will be created using the default selections on this page.
- Q: What does the Share tab on the widget do?
- The Share tab allows users to easily spread the word about your cause through the widget. When creating your widget profile, you can choose to have Facebook or Twitter icons available in the Share tab so users can click through to those websites and publish a message to their Facebook wall or send a Tweet. You may also choose to customize these messages for your users.
- Q: What does the Copy tab on the widget do?
- The Copy tab allows users to copy the widget to their own Facebook wall or website, by clicking the designated icons within that tab. For Facebook, users are directed to enter their contact information and can then select to publish to their individual profile or copy FBML code to their Fan page. For websites, the same process is followed, and users are given a block of HTML code to copy to their website or blog publishing platform.
- Q: What does the Connect tab on the widget do?
- The Connect tab allows users to connect with your cause on Facebook, Twitter, or MySpace. When creating your widget profile, you can enter the URLs for your organization's pages on these sites. The icons within this tab will then link directly to those pages. If you choose not to enter these URLs, these icons will not be displayed on the widget.
- Q: Can I stage the widget to my site while waiting for verification?
- Yes. After completing your widget profile, you will receive a block of code that you can use to stage the widget on Facebook or your website. Once your organization is approved by PayPal, your widget will become fully functional.
- Q: How do I publish the WhatGives!? PayPal Widget to Facebook or my website?
- Code is automatically generated in the last step after creating your widget profile. Copy the HTML code to manually paste onto your website, or copy the FBML (for Facebook) to paste onto your Fan page in a FBML box. WhatGives!? recommends publishing the widget on the Wall of your Facebook Fan Page for best results. To do this, you will need to first install the widget to a Boxes tab and then move it to the Wall. - Q: The widget on Facebook looks static. How does it activate?
- Facebook requires that applications using Flash (or any server connect including JavaScript) require a user to click to activate. Just click the "click to activate" banner on the widget for full functionality.
- Q: All I see is a blank space in place of widget.
- The widget works on Flash players 8 and up, which covers 99.7% of all U.S. users. This problem could occur if Flash is not installed on your computer or is running an earlier version. Please go to the Adobe site to see if you have the latest Flash installed on your browser: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/.
- Q: I forgot my password.
- Click "Log in" on widget.whatgives.com, then click the "Forgot Password" link and follow the steps indicated.
- Q: How do I update my widget? Will it automatically update or do I need to create a new one?
- You can update your widget anytime by logging in to your widget profile at widget.whatgives.com. After logging in, just click the appropriate link (i.e. widget design, social profile, etc.) to make updates, and click "save" at the bottom of the page when finished. Your published widget will be dynamically updated with any changes – no need to replace widget code on Facebook or your website.
- Q: When I update my widget, will the copies of my widget also get updated?
- Yes. For example, when you replace the widget image, the new image will appear on the copies as well.
- Q: How do I delete my widget?

Login to your widget profile at widget.whatgives.com. After logging in, click the "disable" link next to the designated widget name to remove.
- Q: When I delete my widget, will all copies of my widget also be deleted?
- Yes. When you disable your widget, you are disabling all copies of your widget. Removing the widget from your Facebook page or website only keeps it from being displayed; copies of your widget will remain in existence until you disable the widget from your widget profile at widget.whatgives.com.
